Wamena Airport

Wamena Airport (Indonesian: Bandar Udara Wasior) (IATA: WMX, ICAO: WAVV) serves the town of Wamena, Puncak Jaya Regency, Papua Province, Indonesia. It also caters to the neighboring Lanny Jaya Regency and Tolikara Regency. Being the only airport in the highland region of Papua capable of accommodating narrow-body aircraft like the Airbus A320, Boeing 737, and C-130 Hercules, it holds significant importance. Moreover, it acts as the entry point to the Baliem Valley, renowned for the annual Baliem Valley Cultural Festival.

Terminal Facilities

Recently inaugurated by President Joko Widodo, the new terminal resembles the traditional Papuan home, honai, covering an area of 4,000 m2, replacing the old terminal of only 965 m2. It features 5 check-in counters, an air-conditioned boarding lounge, expanded restroom facilities, and increased seating capacity. Air-side facilities include two aircraft stands covering areas of 180 m x 45 m and 356 m x 45 m each.

The operation of the Airport falls under UPT Ditjen Hubud, an agency under the Ministry of Transportation, Indonesia.

Located at an elevation of 1,550 m (6,200 ft) above mean sea level, Wamena Airport has one runway designated 15/33 with an asphalt surface measuring 2,175 m (7,136 ft) in length. The airport's precarious location amidst high mountains and unpredictable weather conditions in the highlands of Papua make it one of the most challenging airports in Indonesia, with past accidents resulting in fatalities.
