The objective of airport security will be to safeguard the passengers, crew, ground personnel, the general public and the airport infrastructure against unlawful acts as per International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices laid down in Annexure-17 to the Chicago Convention.

Most of airport has now been given an Airport Security Unit, a trained unit to counter unlawful interference with civil aviation. Apart from the Airport Security Unit, every domestic airline has an security group who looks after the aircraft security.

Terrorist threats and narcotics are the main threats in most airports. Before boarding, additional searching of hand luggage is likely in some airports in sensitive area.

The cargo security / screening is done by the Regulated Agents or Airlines / Airports own security staff who are tested and certified by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), an aviation security Regulator.
