Bear River Massacre Monument
The monument was erected by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers in memory of the
Battle of Bear River (Massacre at Boa Ogoi), which took place on January 29,
1863, between the United States Army and the Shoshone Indians.
The United States Army attacked Shoshone gathered at the confluence of the Bear
River and Beaver Creek in what was then southeastern Washington Territory.
Western Shoshone Indians acquired the Bear River Massacre site in 2008 to
protect it as a sacred burial ground. They intend to erect their own monument in
memory of victims of the massacre which occurred on January 29, 1863.
