Bellefontaine Cemetery

Bellefontaine Cemetery
Bellefontaine Cemetery

This cemetery was established after the cholera epidemic of 1849. Many bodies were moved from the St. Louis Cemetery downtown to this burial ground. A number of the famous Busch and Lemp family of brewers are buried here.

The neighborhoods around the cemeteries are among the roughest in St. Louis, particularly to the immediate west and south.

The cemetery is also the resting place for several victims of the 1855 railway accident known as the Gasconade Bridge train disaster.
