Devils Tower National Monument
Devil's Tower rises 1267 feet (386 m) above the surrounding land and is part of
the United States first official National Monument. It played a large role in
the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."

is 5112 feet (1558 m) above sea level.
The tower is part of the first United States National Monument, established on
September 24, 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. 1347 acres (5.45 km2) are
included within the Monument's boundaries.
Devil's Tower is featured prominently in the 1977 film Close Encounters of the
Third Kind.
American Indian legends tell of six Sioux girls who were picking flowers when
they were chased by bears. Feeling sorry for them, the Great Spirit raised the
ground beneath the girls. The bears tried to climb the rock, but fell off,
leaving their scratch marks on the sides.

Devils Tower National Monument can be reached by public transportation through
the Greyhound Bus Lines. The closest Greyhound bus station to Devils Tower is
located in Sundance, Wyoming, which is about 20 miles away from the monument.
From Sundance, visitors can take a taxi or a private shuttle service to get to
the monument. Another option is to rent a car from the Greyhound station and
drive to the monument, which takes about 30 minutes. It is also possible to take
a bus from the nearby town of Hulett to Devils Tower, but the frequency of the
bus service is limited.
