The Netherlands Transit Visa

A visa is mostly not required to transit through Netherlands providing that they do not intend to leave the international transit area.

As a foreign national, you do not enter the Schengen Area. In principle, you are not subject to entry visa requirements, with some exceptions. Certain nationalities are subject to visa requirements to transit through an airport in Netherlands (Airport Transit Visa or ATV).

With an airport transit visa you may only change to another airplane to a destination outside the Schengen area. You may not leave the airport and you do not have access to the Schengen area.

When you are traveling from the airport (by plane, car, train or bus) to another Schengen country, you need a Schengen visa (C-visa).

Nationals of the following countries need an Airport Transit Visa to change aircraft at the airport in Netherlands:

• Afghanistan
• Bangladesh
• Congo (Democratic Rep.)
• Eritrea
• Ethiopia
• Ghana
• Guinea
• Guinea Bissau
• Nepal
• Iran
• Iraq

• Nigeria
• Pakistan
• Somalia
• Sri Lanka
• Sierra Leone
• Sudan
• Syria
• South Sudan
