Bankhead Tunnel
Named for John Hollis Bankhead, an Alabama politician and U.S. Senator, the
tunnel was built in sections and floated to the proper positions, then sunk. It
opened to the public on February 20, 1941.

Getting There
The Bankhead Tunnel is a historic tunnel located in Mobile, Alabama, that
connects downtown Mobile to the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. Here are some ways
to get there:
By Car: You can get to the Bankhead Tunnel by car. If you're coming from the
east or west, take I-10 to Mobile and then take the Water Street exit. If you're
coming from the north or south, take I-65 to I-165, which will lead you to Water
Street. There is no parking available inside the tunnel, but there are parking
garages nearby.
By Public Transportation: The Wave Transit System provides bus service in and
around Mobile. You can take the bus to the Bankhead Tunnel. Check their website

By Ferry: The Mobile Bay Ferry provides service between Dauphin Island and Fort
Morgan. If you're coming from Dauphin Island, you can take the ferry to Fort
