Founded in 1831, UA is the flagship school of the University of Alabama System. Its athletic teams are nicknamed the "Crimson Tide" because crimson is one of the school colors. UA is composed of a campus of approximately 1,000 acres (4 km²).

On June 11, 1963, Governor George Wallace stood in the front entrance of Foster Auditorium in a symbolic attempt to stop the enrollment of two African Americans: Vivian Malone and James Hood.

The University of Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The nearest airport to the University of Alabama is Tuscaloosa Regional Airport (TCL), which is about 7 miles away from the campus. However, no airlines have served Tuscaloosa on a scheduled basis since the departure of American Eagle in 1997.
