Nicosia International Airport

Nicosia International Airport (NIC), located just west of Nicosia, Cyprus, was
once the main airport of the island. It opened in the 1930s and served as a
vital hub for international flights until its closure in 1974 due to the
conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
The airport has remained inactive since, with its facilities falling into
disrepair. It is now located within the United Nations Buffer Zone and is under
the control of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
Before its closure, the airport had a single terminal offering basic amenities
for travelers, including check-in counters, lounges, and small duty-free shops.
Airlines such as Cyprus Airways, BEA (British European Airways), and Middle East
Airlines operated flights to Europe and the Middle East.
Today, Nicosia International Airport stands as a reminder of the island's
divided history. It is no longer in operation, and the main air travel gateways
for Cyprus have shifted to Larnaca
International Airport (LCA) and
Paphos International Airport (PFO), both located in the southern part of the
island.
