Doha International Airport

Doha International Airport (IATA: DIA, ICAO: OTBD), previously Qatar's primary international airport, is located just 4 kilometers southeast of Doha's city center. It served as the main gateway to Qatar until 2014, when Hamad International Airport (HIA) replaced it as the country's primary international airport.

Facilities

Doha International Airport had a single terminal that offered a range of facilities for travelers. These included duty-free shops, restaurants, prayer rooms, and lounges. The airport also had facilities for business travelers, such as meeting rooms and VIP lounges. It was equipped to handle both international and domestic flights, with several gates and check-in counters.

Airlines

Before its closure as the main airport, Doha International Airport was a hub for Qatar Airways and served numerous international airlines. The airport facilitated flights to major destinations across the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. After the opening of Hamad International Airport, commercial airline operations were transferred there.

Current Use

While Hamad International Airport now handles most of Qatar's commercial air traffic, Doha International Airport remains in use for specific purposes. It is primarily used for private flights, military operations, and occasionally for overflow traffic during peak periods or special events. The airport's infrastructure remains intact, and it can be reactivated for commercial use if needed.

Public Transportation

Doha International Airport was well-connected to Doha’s city center by road. Taxis were the most common mode of transport, and several bus routes also served the airport. With the opening of Hamad International Airport, public transportation links were redirected there, but taxis and private vehicles still provide access to the old airport for its current limited uses.

Significance

Doha International Airport played a crucial role in the development of Qatar’s aviation industry, serving as the country's main airport for several decades. While it has been largely superseded by Hamad International Airport, it remains a key part of Qatar's aviation infrastructure and continues to serve in a limited capacity.
