Chileka International Airport

Chileka International Airport (BLZ) is the main international gateway serving
Blantyre, Malawi’s second-largest city. Located about 13 kilometers northwest of
the city center, the airport is relatively small but plays a vital role in
connecting southern Malawi to regional and limited international destinations.
Facilities
The airport has a compact terminal building that handles both domestic and
international flights. Facilities are basic, including check-in counters,
customs and immigration services, baggage claim, and a few shops and cafés
offering light refreshments. Banking and currency exchange services are
available, though limited, and Wi-Fi access is intermittent. A small VIP lounge
caters to premium passengers, and car rental desks can be found in the arrivals
area.
Airlines and Destinations
Several regional airlines operate from Chileka, including
Ethiopian
Airlines, Kenya
Airways, and
South
African Airways (via franchise/partner carriers). Malawian Airlines, the
national carrier, offers domestic flights to Lilongwe and international services
to hubs such as Johannesburg, Nairobi, and Addis Ababa. Routes are primarily
regional, linking Malawi to East and Southern Africa.
Public Transportation
Taxis are the main form of transport between the airport and Blantyre, with
travel times of around 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. There is no public
bus service directly serving the airport, so most travelers rely on pre-arranged
hotel transfers, private cars, or taxis.
Passenger Guides
This passenger guides are available to help you find your route through the airports easily and efficiently.
